The Risk-Monger participated in the EU Transparency Register Consultation. He would like to see clear definitions of how academics and scientists lobby, create a Registry for journalists, have a section where organisations upload their internal ethical codes of conduct and make it clear that NGOs also have conflicts of interest which I call a conflict of influence.

Today EU Ombudsperson, Emily O’Reilly, lashed out against industry lobbying and promised to promote good lobbying. Partiality and bias should not be part of an ombudsman’s job title … she needs to be fired! But as only the bad lobbyists would make that call, her position is safe.

Five years ago, the world was on the brink of collapse from catastrophic climate change. As fear-mongers got rich, the Risk-Monger had a rich picking of ridiculous cases of abusive PR and scientific activism. The Environmental-Industrial Complex has evolved over these five years, but is showing no signs of weakening its hold on our media attention, fear levels or pocket-books.

This week, as a known activist and anti-industry lobbyist releases a “documentary” where she pretends to be a journalist, we see a good illustration of the need for a mechanism to separate the real journalists from the predators. Like lobbyists, journalists should have a transparency registry so innocent policy-makers and industry representatives can communicate in good faith, without deception and ulterior motives.
